Amy Shackleton

Amy Shackleton has a unique style of painting. SHE DOESN'T USE A BRUSH. Her work is purely strategically placed paint squeezed straight from the tube. I think the end products are incredible for the process of application she uses.

Miriam Schapiro

Her work is a bit girly for my taste, but still beautiful.  Everything she does is extremely feminine and intricate.  I love all of the color she uses and will try and incorporate bold patterns like these in my piece as well.

Tracey Emin

I don't necessarily like or agree with her subject matter, but i really love her patchwork and lettering.

Denise Burge

Lately I have been searching for artists who work with fabric for inspiration for senior show. Hollis showed me these next few artists. :)

Malayka Gormally

In my life drawing class we have been practicing drawing by using modified blind contour. I absolutely love the results of this technique and have been drawn to it lately. Malayka has some beautiful paintings where she uses modified blind contour very successfully.

Colwyn Thomas

Colwyn Thomas is currently stationed in South Africa and does some amazing prints and commercial illustrations.  I love his use of distinct contours juxtaposed with washes of water color.

Lucy Kirkman

Lucy Kirkman combines classical art history with pop culture in her work.  I love her use of color and combination of digital photographs and paint.

Kai Samuels-Davis

Kai's paintings have a sculptural quality that I really admire.  The paint looks noticeably thick, almost as if he used it to sculpt these figures.  His work seems very personal and according to his artist statement, he focuses on the moments we keep to ourselves and paints them as a sort of quiet escape.  I think it is interesting that he never paints eyes, or if he does, they are closed.

Alice Neel

Alice Neel has a style of painting that reminds me of Anh Duong.  Both exaggerate facial features using color and enlarged features.  I LOVE Alice Neel's Nancy and Olivia.  Pieces about mother and child have a sweet spot in my heart.

Rev Howard Finster

I saw Howard Finster's work for the first time after reading about him in the text book for Hollis' class and am slowing becoming more intrigued by his work.  It has definitely been influencing my concepts for my senior show piece. I love that the subject of most of his paintings is purely text, scripture more specifically.

Letters

I've been doing a bit of research for my senior show idea and have found some artists who sew directly onto the canvas. (For my piece I want to create letters out of my mom's clothes and sew them onto canvases to display bible verses or something of that nature).  Anywho, these are just some cool artists I found that create and sew letters on canvas or muslin.
